The Office of the Greek Ombudsman has begun cooperating with the Directorate of Human Rights of the Council of Europe, in the framework of the First Working Table of the Stability Pact, in a series of activities set at a meeting held in Budapest in December 1999, which was attended by the Greek Ombudsman Professor Nikiforos Diamandouros and the deputy Ombudsmen Yiorgos Kaminis and Aliki Koutsoumari. The task at hand is the implementation of an action plan for the building of civic institutions in Southeastern Europe, with emphasis given to the establishment of Ombudsman-type mediation institutions. These activities aim to contribute to the shaping process and medium-term support for the 'young' mediation institutions in the countries of Southeastern Europe. Furthermore, they aim to provide training for the ombudsmen personnel and the creation of informal international networks and their long-term support.
